The initial view of Prague during winter was not real. It was snowing gently and the streets were deserted and the city had the look of something in an ancient fairy tale.

I recall being on the hill with the towers and rooftops shimmering with white that summer tourists would never experience this incarnation of Prague. Winter offers another spirit to the city, particularly to its castles.

Winter castles in Prague are not overcrowded and dramatic. They are relaxed, in an enigmatic and very atmospheric way. When you visit in the colder seasons these castle experiences make some of the most memorable times of your visit.

If you want to experience a luxurious start of your trip then you should book meet and greet parking at Stansted and travel stress free.

Prague Castle in a Winter Hush.

Prague Castle is spectacular any time of the year, but of the sound, winter leaves the castle bare. One morning when I was walking on the grounds of the castle I was able to hear my footsteps on cobblestones. Snow has been collecting on the roof-tops and statues and the normal crowds have disappeared.

St Vitus Cathedral was even more prominent in the white winter sky. The coziness, colored glass and silence within made it seem like a contemplative atmosphere. Strolling through the Golden Lane later was like entering a fairytale village with the snow-dusted colorful houses. Winter allows you to have time to really take in the castle.

Vysehrad and the City Viewed Over.

Vysehrad is neglected often, and so, it is ideal during the winter time. I recall walking up the trail, as the air became colder, and it was compensated by expansive scenery of the river Vltava cutting through the city. The snow made the scenery softer and the city below so quiet and far away.

It is particularly spooky in winter, when the fortress walls and the ancient cemetery as well as the solitude of the walkways meet the eye. There is a silence here which makes you pause and take a breath, and look. Vysehrad does not concern itself with big buildings. It concerns the atmosphere and view point.

Karlstejn Castle in the Snow

One of the day trips that a person can make out of Prague is Karlstejn Castle, which can be described as another outing right out of the middle ages.

I had come on a snowy winter day, and strolled through an almost deserted village to the castle growing over the trees. The forest was covered with snow and the silence increased the weight and reality of everything.

The ascending to the castle heats you soon and the scene beneath is worth all the climb. Winter transforms Karlstejn into the world of imagination. You don't just see history. You feel it.

Troja Palace and Its Winter Gardens.

What Troja Palace has to offer is the other type of beauty. During winter the formal gardens are slumbering in frost, and the baroque palace is sleeping silently in the grey sky. I strolled around the grounds and liked the order and the tranquility.

The palace is intimate without summer crowds. It is an area of included walks and noisy contemplation, ideal to those travellers who are attracted to a building and serenity.

Hidden Views and Winter Walks.

Among my best winter experiences in Prague was the act of just strolling among castles. It was magical crossing Charles Bridge at the beginning of the morning, then seeing river mist rising, and seeing castle silhouettes in the distance. The winter light transforms all the things, and it makes the things that were familiar new.

The reason the Castles in Prague are different during winter.

The castles in Prague in the winter do not involve crossing castles out of the list. They're about mood.

The snow, silence and the lack of people enable the history of the city to breathe. You can hear your own footsteps, you have the cold air and you can see details that are very difficult to notice during the warmer seasons.

Prague becomes a city of secret stories in winter. This is the best time of the year to visit its castles at their best.
