Pallets have been in use since the early 1920s. In the past, producers stored items in barrels, crates, boxes, and more. Prior to palletizers, employees manually stacked cases and various packages. This was effective for many years, but with industrialization and World War II, production levels increased, and ultimately, workers were unable to maintain the pace. Furthermore, the pallets were excessively large to be safely handled by hand. To address this issue, Lamson Corp (currently ARPAC) created and constructed the initial mobilized palletizer in 1948.

Palletizers, known as case pickers, are machines designed specifically for loading and unloading pallets both prior to shipping and during storage. Palletizers are essentially Mast-Equipped Automated Guided Vehicles (AVGs). Manual palletizers are still in use, but typically, supply and production facilities prefer automated and robotic palletizers for loading and unloading instead of manual types. Palletizers are employed to consistently lift, rotate, and manipulate wooden and plastic pallets independently.
